Environmental Project Manager (Engineering)

Location: Remote, U.S. or Canada

Tradewater is a B Corp and mission-based project development company that is in business to prevent catastrophic climate change. Our mission is to improve the environment and create economic opportunity through the collection, control, and destruction of potent, non-CO2 greenhouse gases. Tradewater believes that a company committed to cleaning up the environment can be just as successful – if not more so – than a company that achieves its goals without regard to environmental impact.

Non-CO2 gases account for nearly half of all global warming from human activity since 1970.  Our work, referred to as “emergency brake solutions” by Project Drawdown, is essential to prevent catastrophic climate change. Our projects include the destruction of refrigerants and halon fire suppressants that are potent greenhouse gases and deplete the ozone layer. We also find, measure, and plug orphaned oil and gas wells that have no solvent operator and are leaking methane into the atmosphere. To date, we have permanently prevented over 7.5 million tons of CO2e from reaching the atmosphere and we are on a path to surpass 27 million tons of CO2e by the end of 2027.

The Opportunity

To support its growth in plugging orphaned oil and gas wells, Tradewater is seeking an Environmental Project Manager (Engineering) to help fight climate change in a tangible and meaningful way. This position is key to the success of our methane work to prevent the emission of harmful greenhouse gases.

The Environmental Project Manager (Engineering) position is hands-on, requiring regular work in the field, working with orphaned oil and gas wells. When not in the field managing the finding of wells, the quantification of their associated fluids, and managing plugging efforts, this role requires collaborating with our pipeline development team, coordinating efforts for trips to the field, data analysis, and providing necessary information for  the carbon credit verification process. Strong candidates will have extensive experience in oil and gas, field experience working on wells, as well as familiarity with carbon project development.

While Tradewater is based in Chicago, Illinois, this position is largely remote, and is open to candidates anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada. Travel up to 30% of the time is expected, and applicants must live in close proximity to a major airport.

Applications for this position will be accepted through Friday, January 31.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Working as a part of a team developing a pipeline of orphaned oil and gas well projects.
  • Play a key role in managing our orphaned oil and gas well plugging efforts, from the identification of wells, to the quantification of methane emissions, leading well plugging projects, through to project verification and carbon credit issuance.
  • Oversight of in-the-field safety efforts and protocols.
  • Interfacing with internal and external partners to move projects forward, including but not limited to technicians, contractors, other project managers, and government officials.
  • Processing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data from analytical equipment, historical records, and a variety of databases.
  • Researching the technical, market, environmental, and regulatory context of our projects and innovation concepts to identify constraints and opportunities and communicate them clearly in reports, memos, whitepapers, and presentations.
  • Understanding governing methodologies, and managing projects to those methodologies to ensure successful carbon credit verification and issuance.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred in a scientific or engineering discipline (chemical, petroleum, mechanical, environmental, or industrial).
  • 5+ years of professional experience managing oil & gas projects, ideally as a carbon project developer.
  • Hands-on field experience working with oil and/or gas wells. Should be familiar and comfortable with wellhead handling and one or more of the following areas: drilling and/or workover, well completion, production testing, wireline testing, gas processing, or plugging.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience and adeptness at managing relationships with external partners including technical consultants, energy industry contractors, government and policy officials, and landowners.
  • Hands-on experience with chemical or analytical equipment preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with Project Management including planning, setting priorities, managing dependencies, and managing multiple projects across multi-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel to the field and other locations as needed. Schedule may vary; however, estimated up to 30% of time. Due to the various locations of our work, the candidate should be located within close proximity of a major airport.
  • Experience performing data analysis and building simple models in Excel or other tools.
  • Experience managing direct reports.
  • Ability to influence and build relationships with key stakeholders and constituents in a multicultural environment with a variety of different perspectives.
  • Ability to embrace ambiguity and create clarity for decision making when a diverse range of options are available.
  • Demonstrated track record of approaching problems with an attitude of inquiry and commitment to seeking answers and finding a way to make something work.
  • Creative, curious, and an open attitude.
  • Enthusiasm for Tradewater’s mission to collect, control, and destroy greenhouse gases.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
